URBAN PENTATHLON

The proposed interactive installations approach the theme of city-leisure giving the chance to citizens and visitors of all ages to participate into a series of quasi-athletic events/games.
Even though they are structurally autonomous, they are parasitic, borrowing their energy from people's flow and movements, their spontaneous engagement, as well as from the streaming images of the Olympic Athens that are fed into the system of the game via the internet. We wished to bring into the foreground the joy of public physical activity through these games as well as to give a multidimensional image of human presence into the city of Athens.
The structures have 5 different variations, each one refering to the 5 games of ancient classical Pentathlon: running, javelin, jumping, wrestling and discus. For each "game" the form and position of the elastic fabric projection screen as well as the patterns of interaction and competition changes. The participants influence the projected images in different ways through their movement within the designated field. The onlookers also participate with their shadows.
The structures are lightweight and entirely demountable. The five pavilions resemble ephemeral temples for the worship of physical public play.
